Why Create a Site?

There are a few reasons as to why I wanted to create a site. One of the tech channels that I watch and want to shout out is NetworkChuck. On one of his videos mentioned about the need for everyone looking for a job in information technology needs their own website.

My goal is to be able to use this site as a reference for the different projects that I have worked on, tech related and otherwise. In addition to the site, I'm also planning on creating videos of my projects as well, with the idea of my videos having a bit more of a less serious vibe to them.

The Creation

My first attempt at creating a site was with 000webhost, powered by Hostinger, which was pretty simple to use. Before I finished setting it up, I purchased a domain name, which I ran into problems with getting it connected to my WordPress site. Deciding to work on it later, I ended up working on other things and left my site to sit.

A lot of my spare time was dedicated to learning Azure, in which I decided to create a WordPress site in Azure. The two resources I found helpful in creating an Azure WordPress site was this video coupled with Microsoft's documentation.

Once I got the website up and running, I ended up getting distracted with other things and did not really dive into setting up the site itself. I spent most of my time learning about the backend stuff instead.

Eventually I got hit with the credit card statement. Not even a month of the site being set up and Microsoft charged me $80. A few weeks later, I decided to cut my losses and delete all of my resources from Azure. Since the site was set up with a database and a CDN, I should not have been surprised with how much it cost, but with this being a blog in which I will not need much storage (at least starting out), I figured it wasn't worth it.

I went back to the drawing board and looked at the cheapest ways to host a website. I ended up seeing that WordPress's website have a decent "free" category, which will have everything that I need for now.

The Future

What does the future hold for my site? Who knows. It might be something that I tire of updating at some point, or maybe it will turn into something more. Right now my focus will remain on learning more about WordPress with my next topic that I plan on diving into will be securing the site itself. I've heard of multiple WordPress security issues in the past and I don't want this site to be impacted by any of those vulnerabilities if possible.
